Marvel Studios closed its Hall H presentation by walking Robert Downey Jr. onto the stage in a green hooded cloak, and confirming what had been the industry's worst-kept secret for a fortnight: he is playing Victor von Doom in Avengers: Doomsday.
The interesting part was not the casting. It was what the studio did to its own branding forty seconds later.
The logo changed colour
The Doomsday title card is silver and chrome, outlined in green, with the Marvel Studios logo rendered in the same green rather than its signature red. That red has been constant since 2011. Setting it aside for a single film is not a marketing flourish — it is the studio telling you whose film this is.
A second logo variant fractures the Avengers A with glowing green energy cracks. Both treatments put Doom's colour, not the team's, at the centre of the campaign.
He is not coming back as someone you already know. Kevin Feige, responding to a question about Tony Stark
A new role, not a variant
The obvious reading of bringing Downey back to a franchise he left in Endgame is that this is a Tony Stark variant from another universe. Marvel closed that door explicitly in the press session afterwards: this is Victor von Doom, and the resemblance is not a plot point the film intends to explain.
That is a harder and more interesting choice. It means the audience has to accept a familiar face in an unfamiliar part on the film's terms, without the comfort of a multiversal explanation.
What this does to the Fantastic Four
Doom's defining relationship in this material is with Reed Richards, and Marvel has cast that side of it too. Pedro Pascal and Vanessa Kirby both appear in Doomsday, crossing over from their own universe.
- Doom vs. Reed — the rivalry the whole film is built on
- Doom vs. the Avengers — the fight the marketing is selling
- Doom vs. Magneto — two absolute rulers, no reason to defer to each other
The third of those is the one nobody was expecting, and on the evidence of the final trailer it may carry more of the film than the first.
What is still unknown
Marvel confirmed the casting and the date. It did not confirm how Doom arrives, whether he is the antagonist of Secret Wars as well, or how much of the ensemble survives to reach it. Anything you read on those points today is rumour, and we will label it that way.
